The Role

Under the direction of  Plant Manager,  the Working Shop Supervisor is responsible for Directing shop employees and the flow of processes to achieve highest productivity and quality in a safe manner to meet customer requirements and government regulations.

Requirements

 

Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Key Result Items

  • Ship and receive mill rolls.  Monitor employee output for productivity, quality and safety.  Communicate with customers to schedule pickup and deliveries, as well as quality issues that arise.  Coordinate the pickup and delivery of rolls that need outside processing.
  • Schedule trucks for pickups and deliveries.
  • Communicate with customers for pickup and deliveries.
  • Receive and ship rolls.
  • Verify roll numbers on rolls with paperwork.
  • Identify all rolls without a roll number with green ID tags.
  • Accurately enter rolls received into the computer system.
  • Organize and maintain the job folder system.
  • Maintain the production board with up-to-date processing information.
  • Maintain the logbook.
  • Assign jobs to each machine from the production board.
  • Monitor each machine’s progress to maintain workload schedule
  • Coordinate rolls going to and returning from outside processing.
  • Prepare Bill of Lading and necessary shipping documents.
  • Inspect any rolls suspected of having defects.
  • Document non-conforming product and the cause of the problem when known.
  • Accurately report production and trucking activity for the shift on the appropriate logs.
  • Log rolls into Burns Harbor “LIVE” system.
  • Ensure proper shipping documentation is prepared per customer requirements.  I.e. Pro-Mic reports, Asko scan reports, inspection reports, etc.
  • Always maintain a polite and professional relationship with the customers.
  • Train operators on safe operating procedures.
  • Direct maintenance employees in emergency maintenance situations.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness of crew employees.
  • Communicate and enforce plant rules and regulations.
  • Report all unsafe conditions and accidents.
  • Execute the Emergency Contingency Plan during an emergency.
  • Promote cooperation & teamwork with your crew and try to defuse potential negative situations.
  • Initiate disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Communicate accurately daily shift information to relief working shop supervisors, management and customers.
  • Promote and encourage good housekeeping practices.
  • Ensure that employees, contractors and visitors follow the company safety program.
  • Issue hot work permits when needed.  Pre-inspect area prior to welding.  Appoint an employee to perform fire watch.
  • Organize rolls in shop and stage rolls as close as possible to the machine where they will be processed.
  • Maintain the foreman logbook with a brief explanation of all customer communications.
  • Must be able to read an SDS to find information about safe handling of chemicals, medical treatment for exposure, or to find environmental information for spill cleanup.
  • Transport rolls to and from racks, floor and machines using the crane.
  • Follow safe work practices and habits and lead by example.
  • Provide first aid and CPR until local area Emergency Responders arrive.

 

Knowledge

  • Mechanical aptitude and basic math skills required.
  • Overhead crane training, Hazardous Communication, First Aid and CPR.

Education and Experience

  • Highschool Diploma or GED
  • Previous supervision experience desired

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
