The incumbent will be part of the Human Resources Team and provide labor relations expertise and support to the management team.

The responsibilities include: the negotiation, application and interpretation, and administration of collective agreements, related policies, procedures and legislation, taking into account case law as well as recognized industry common practice in the different regions across Canada.  A large component of the incumbent’s activities will be in support of our site installation and construction operation.  The Labor Relations Specialist represents the interests of the organization in the management of contentious cases.

ANDRITZ offers a hybrid work arrangement, combining teleworking and attendance in the office. You will be based at one of our offices in the Greater Montreal Area, with travel to construction sites as required.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Act as the primary resource person for managers and the human resources team for questions regarding labor relations, including any questions relating to the interpretation of collective agreements or in the management of complex cases requiring labor relations expertise;
  • Oversee collective bargaining procedures, including drafting, reviewing and modifying proposals, verifying legal contract terminology and facilitating meetings with union representatives;
  • Provide interpretations and develop strategies with regards to the application of the collective agreements, employment terminations, disciplinary measures, etc.;
  • Support project management teams during project construction mobilization phase to implement the labor agreements considering the specificities of the site (eg presence of multiple unions agreements, union and non-union presence)
  • Provide governance in the implementation and management of collective agreements across our project construction sites;
  • Assist and occasionally participate in various labor management meetings with union representatives, customers, and contractors;
  • Assist managers to deal with labor movements on site (eg strikes) in regards to labor conditions 
  • Conduct investigations which may arise from harassment complaints and/or others;
  • Manage labor grievances as needed by investigating circumstances of incident, validity of claims, adherence to contract policies and completion of resolution procedures;
  • Work closely with the company’s legal representatives in conciliation, mediation and arbitration hearings;
  • Communicate effectively with managers and union representatives regularly to foster a collaborative working environment;
  • Participate in various committees between the union representatives and employer;

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • University degree in Industrial Relations, Human Resources or Law (labor and employment), or equivalent work experience;
  • 5-7 years in a labor relations or comparable field with 3 years as a recognized labor relations specialist in a building trade or similar construction environment;
  • Excellent knowledge of employment laws and different trends that govern labor relations in Quebec, Ontario and other provinces;
  • Previous experience as a spokesperson in the context of the renewal of collective agreements;
  • Previous experience having represented the interests of the employer before administrative tribunals and within the framework of working committees (joint committees, grievance committees, etc.);
  • Bilingual French/English is a requirement;
  • Excellent communication skills; 
  • Strong leadership and ability to influence;
  • Successful track record of relationship building and ability to address issues with a win-win approach;
  • Have a demonstrated problem solving and solution-oriented approach;
  • Ability to plan, organize and set priorities;
  • Highly developed analytical mind;
  • Demonstrate rigor and thoroughness;
