Manufacturing Manager

Spokane, WA - hybrid (remote on Fridays)

 

Summary of the role 

 

This role, reporting directly to the North America Manufacturing Director, is designed to lead and guide the Manufacturing team at our Spokane facility. The team is responsible for refurbishing hydroelectric turbines, generators, and water control equipment, ensuring top-notch performance and reliability.

 

Specializing in manufacturing and refurbishing large hydroelectric equipment, our machine shop is looking for a dynamic leader who will help us grow the business and maintain its ability to provide efficient services when our clients need it the most.

 

Direct reports include a manufacturing office team of 5 employees and a growing shopfloor workforce of 20 machinists, millwright and welders in Spokane, WA.

 

The following responsibilities form the core of this role: 

 

Human Resources Management:

  • Secure the right talent, capacity and competence levels;
  • Set team goals and objectives;
  • Conduct performance evaluations, facilitate development, and implement corrective measures when necessary;
  • Plan and manage salary structures;
  • Prevent or resolve potential conflicts within the team and with other departments.

 

Employee Engagement and Motivation:

  • Foster a high level of engagement and motivation among employees;
  • Develop and foster a culture of accountability and collaboration.
  • Task and Priority Management:
  • Maintain a work environment and practices that are safe, environmentally sound, and in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and Andritz standards for HSE and Quality;
  • Plan and manage the department’s workload effectively;
  • Assign tasks and set priorities for team leads in coordination with internal customers (projects) and upper management;
  • Manage Manufacturing KPIs and report to Global Manufacturing team.

 

Project Execution:

  • Assist sales to prepare manufacturing budget estimation and execution strategy;
  • Evaluate and raise potential execution risk;
  • Monitor and follow up on projects to be manufactured on budget, on time and with required quality;
  • Oversee maintenance, project execution and project KPIs;
  • Maintain good understanding of project progress;
  • Budget management;
  • Oversee cost center budgeting (investment plans and request) and control liquidations.

 

Tools and Processes:

  • Evaluate tools and processes, standardize work practices, promote digitalization and follow ISO standards;
  • Ensure adherence to manufacturing processes, audit for correct application;
  • Develop and deploy improvement initiatives and organizational changes as needed;
  • Utilize Continuous Improvement processes and Lean Manufacturing concepts fostering productivity, quality and lower lead times;
  • Manage interfaces with other functions such as HSE, project management, procurement, installation, and quality assurance.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering;
  • Located in or willing to relocate to Spokane, WA;
  • Strong leadership skills;
  • Experience in machining and welding of hydroelectric equipment or heavy mechanical structure (pulp and paper, mining, shipyard, etc.), highly preferred;
  • Solid experience and track record in leading white and blue collar teams;
  • Solutions focused while managing the needs of both internal and external customers;
  • Good written and oral communication abilities;
  • Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to assess competencies, develop employees with a coaching approach;
  • Business skills (Administration, understanding of strategic processes);
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite, and relevant IT tools;
  • 5-10% travel domestically and abroad as required.
