PRINCIPAL DUTIES

The open position is for a Mechanical Engineer in the hydro generator engineering group. The team is responsible for the design of large hydro generator components, with a primary focus on North American generator projects.  This position includes technical responsibility for the mechanical design during all stages of a project life cycle (proposal, contract design, manufacturing and installation). The successful candidate will be involved in a variety of different topics including stress, heat transfer, ventilation, vibration and bearing analysis. The unique requirements of each hydro project make this a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a candidate with related skills and experience.

 

The Mechanical Engineer is expected to work closely with colleagues in the engineering department as well as the project management, manufacturing and installation teams.  Occasional travel to customer locations, project sites or other Andritz offices is required.

 

Individual duties will vary based on project requirements, but generally include the following:  

•    Optimization of hydro generator mechanical design, for proposals, contracts and studies;
•    Analysis of mechanical components, using in-house tools or developing calculations as necessary;
•    Documentation for proposals, technical reports and customer O&M manuals;
•    Review and approval of mechanical drawings to ensure contractual and internal requirements are met;
•    Creation of engineering instructions that define technical requirements for manufacturing , installation and testing;
•    Disposition of non-conformances during manufacturing and installation;
•    Review and analysis of site data and testing;
•    Creation and calibration of design tools.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

 

The ideal candidate is an individual that understands the generator product and has the following skills:

 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering;
  • Professional Engineer registered with the Professional Engineers of Ontario;
  • Minimum of 5 years design experience with hydro generators or other rotating machinery;
  • Computer skills in common PC applications - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel et PowerPoint);
  • Mechanical finite element skills – desired;
  • Excellent problem solving skills, sound judgment, initiative & creativity;
  • Ability to work with people in a team environment;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in French and English.
