Summary of the role
The open position is for a Design Engineer, Mechanical within the hydro generator engineering group. The team is responsible for the custom design of large hydro generator components with a primary focus on North American generator projects. This team is located at the Andritz Hydro Peterborough Generator Center, which includes a modern coil and bar manufacturing facility. This position includes technical responsibility for the mechanical design during all stages of a project life cycle (proposal, contract design, manufacturing and installation). The successful candidate will be involved in a variety of different topics including stress, heat transfer, ventilation, vibration and bearing analysis. The unique requirements of each hydro project make this a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a candidate with related skills and experience.
The Design Engineer, Mechanical is expected to work closely with the local engineering and drafting teams, as well as externally located engineering specialists, project management, manufacturing and installation teams. Occasional travel to customer locations, project sites or other Andritz offices is required.
Individual duties will vary based on project requirements, but generally include the following:
• Collaborate with hydraulic and mechanical design engineers, drafters and project teams to complete the generator design to meet specification requirements while optimizing costs over the project cycle;
• Performs analytical design calculations (stresses and strains) and technical specifications, in accordance with internal design practices and industry requirements;
• Produce engineering instructions for manufacturing and installation;
• Tracks and updates engineering budgets and schedule with project teams;
• Organize and participate in design reviews;
• Review and seal technical documentation produced by himself/herself or under his/her supervision;
• Provide technical support for the manufacturing and installation of turbines or generators;
• Participate in the development and maintenance of tools and design practices;
• Participate in problem solving and root cause identification;
• Prepares technical bid documentation as required.

• University degree in Mechanical Engineering;
• Professional Engineer registered
• Five (5) years in refurbishment or design of hydro electric turbine/generator or in design and repair of heavy mechanical structure (pulp and paper, mining, etc.);
• Profile: Customer-oriented, teamwork, interpersonal skills, technical leadership, solution-oriented and continuous development;
• Excellent written and oral communication abilities;
• Available for occasional trips of over a week in Canada and abroad;
• Knowledge of MS Office suite, CAD system and relevant IT tools;
• Fluency in English required;
• Manufacturing experience (welding, machining and/or casting) and site experience an asset.
