PRIMARY FUNCTION:  Sets up and operates various machines to perform common operations such as buttwelding, grinding, cutoff, punching, forming, drilling a variety of special/standard work, wire-brushing, trucking parts/materials, straightens items such as beams, lance tubes, feed tubes and wallboxes.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT:  Buttwelding equipment, stone saw, abrasive cutoff saw, large press brake, drill press, threading machine, chamfer machine, magnetic drill, hand drill, oxy-acetylene or plasma torch, clamps, jigs, fixtures, templates, rules, weld stud gun, steel tape, hammer, center punch, wrenches, form dies, punch sets, various other measuring devices and hand tools, hydraulic press, work supports, stress relieving equipment, grit blaster, grinders such as pedestal, powered hand grinders, air grinder, disk grinder, belt sander, wire brushes, overhead crane, hand trucks, induction, and thickness testing equipment.

MATERIALS:  Rough and semi-finished ferrous and non-ferrous materials in such forms as castings, forgings, weldments, sheet metal, plate, bar stock, pipe, tubing, beams, wallboxes, weld studs, etc.; oxygen, acetylene, emery discs, oil, etc.

DIRECTION EXERCISED:  None

WORKING PROCEDURE:

1.           Receives work assignment, print, sketch and/or verbal orders/instructions from supervisor.  Examines work order and print/sketch to determine operation sequence and inspection requirements.

2.           Operates press brake to form or punch material.  Enters machine operating data to control panel such as bend length and ram stroke adjustment as required from established procedures.

3.           Weld preps, threads, buttwelds, grinds joints, and cuts suspension rods to length.  Refers to set-up sheet for set-up information by may occasionally alter settings to meet varying conditions.

4.           Operates drill press or magnetic drill to drill holes in parts or material; sets up using prescribed tooling, speeds and feeds or according to standard practice.  May drill using jigs, open setups, or layouts.  Uses template or rule to layout for drilling or burnout; may center punch parts.  Removes, exchanges and replaces drills as needed.  Uses oxyacetylene or plasma torch for cutoff or burnout.

5.           Cuts parts/material to length on stone saw or abrasive cutoff saw.  Sets stop or measures and marks object to be cut using steel tape.  Positions and secures part to stop or mark and hand/power feeds blade or wheel to cut off.  Replaces broken or obviously worn-out wheels as needed.

6.           May use torch to heat and straighten when required.

7.           Works under general supervision with guidance and direction available on new work and on setup and operating difficulties.  Help provided for lifting or moving heavy items.

8.           Inspects own work in progress, but work is subject to in-process and final inspection by others.  Stamps and burrs work, records production data, etc., as directed.

9.           Oil tubes.

10.        Removes sharp edges, burrs, slag, etc. from designated areas of wide variety of rough and semi-finished parts using pedestal grinder, wirebrush, gritblaster, powered hand tools, files, etc.

11.        Moves or delivers parts and materials using hand truck, hoist and/or overhead crane; assists other employees in handling/moving materials, etc., as directed.

12.        Frequently works on hydraulic press to straighten products/materials such as I-beams, lance tubes and feed tubes.
