General Description
Reporting to the Plant Superintendent, this position is responsible for the overall shift production activities production, mechanical, maintenance, shipping, etc.). Maintain production logs and monitor equipment and product to ensure all are performing within current SPI and ISO specifications. Directly supervise hourly employees in plant operations, leading, training, and advising their activities to mold a team of competent, proficient employees. Responsible for control of quality, cost, safety, productivity, efficiency and waste. Interface regularly with plant staff, product development, process engineering, vendors, customers, plant manager, cost accountant, technical group and personnel department.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
- Manage 4Ms of the operation (Material, Manning, Machines, and Methods).
- Administer directly and through subordinate lead men all employee relations policies and practices relative to selection, training, performance, evaluation, absence control, communications, discipline, etc., and maintain an adequate, qualified and informed workforce in all sections under scope of supervision.
- Hold employees accountable to their performance and actions. Issue disciplinary action when warranted.
- Organize the production on the shift. Formulate plans, follow trends, and is responsible for meeting approved production schedules and targeted control levels by monitoring progress and taking action to correct undesirable trends.
- Establish and maintain standard processing procedures.
- Maintain safe working conditions in the physical area under scope of supervision and develop and maintain safe work practices, protective devices, and programs designed to achieve these ends. Maintain good housekeeping practices to ensure a safe, clean environment.
- Provide for an environment within assigned area for effective motivation and development of subordinates. Work to achieve and maintain the same environment throughout the plant.
- Is responsible for accurate reporting of all departmental activities as required.
- Perform work on continuous improvement/special projects or assignments as required by the Department Managers.
- Manage material for use (Inventory and quality)
- Monitor daily timecards for errors and approve timecards for final payroll submission.
- Responsible for developing and maintaining process and control procedures and checks.
- Communicate directly with others and try to gain additional knowledge that may be helpful.
- Coach, train, and develop employees on new and current processes and equipment.
- Oversee quality standards and enforce compliance.
- Collaborating with maintenance to oversee equipment optimization and uptime.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Requires a high school diploma and preferably a 4-year degree
- Experience: Requires a minimum of 5+ years’ experience in a Mechanical Shop environment, such as paper mill or fab shop, engineers, supervisors or leadsmen.
- Basic Microsoft Office skills: Word, Excel, Outlook are required.
- Prefer knowledge and experience with Paper Machine Roll Maintenance and Operation.
- Experience with roll shop equipment, disassembly, repair, and assembly of plain press and suction paper rolls.
- Applicant must have a working knowledge of formal quality systems such as ISO, QIT, TQM, etc.
- Experience in motivating, developing, and directing people as they work.
- Experience in inspecting and evaluating the quality of products.
- Knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques.
- Innovation and creativity in solving problems.
- Basic mechanical skills and aptitude.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and implementation of those principles
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills
- Languages: English
