The open position is for a Mechanical Engineer in the balance of plant engineering group. The team is responsible for the design and integration of hydraulic, pneumatic, and cooling water systems supporting hydro turbine and generator units, with a primary focus on U.S. projects. This position includes technical responsibility for the mechanical design during all stages of a project life cycle (proposal, contract design, manufacturing, and installation). The unique requirements of each hydro project make this a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a candidate with related skills and experience.
The Mechanical Engineer is expected to work closely with colleagues in the engineering department as well as the project management, manufacturing, and installation teams. Occasional travel to customer locations, project sites, or other Andritz offices is required.
The following responsibilities form the core of this role:
- Design various auxiliary hydraulic, pneumatic, and cooling water systems for hydroelectric turbine units;
- Directs and performs drafting work associated with the design of these systems;
- Create written specifications for the design, manufacture, and installation of hydraulic governor equipment, hydraulic cylinders, pressure vessels, and auxiliary systems / skids;
- Specify pumps, motors, valves, fittings, oil, instrumentation, etc. to meet contract requirements and industry standards;
- Ensures successful integration with other systems by working with other mechanical / electrical interfacing engineers;
- Liaise with other designers and sub suppliers during component manufacture;
- Resolve technical issues related to projects onsite and remotely;
- Assist project management with technical tasks related to hydro-turbine refurbishment;
- Review quotes and purchase orders for technical completeness.
The following responsibilities are occasionally required in this role:
- Support turbine and generator mechanical groups in design / refurbishment of various rotating and stationary equipment as needed.
- Assist the sales department in the bid for technical issues;
- Disposition of non-conformances during manufacturing and installation;
- Review and analysis of site data and testing;
- Lead design reviews with the aid of the technical subject matter experts;
- Participate in problem solving and root cause identification;
- Perform component checks as required at vendor shops / jobsites.

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering;
- 1-2 years of professional experience OR 1-2 years of internship and/or co-op experience in design and refurbishment of hydraulic, pneumatic, and/or cooling water systems;
- Knowledge of ASME, ANSI, AWWA, and other American/international industrial standards is a plus;
- CAD proficiency required (Siemens NX preferred);
- Experience with instrumentation such as gauges, transmitters, flowmeters, etc;Strong technical writing skills for procedures, communication with site and shops;
- Excellent problem-solving skills, sound judgment, initiative creativity;
- Ability to work with people in a team environment;
- Manufacturing experience (welding, machining and/or casting) and site experience is a plus;
- Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously;
- Solutions-focused while managing the needs of both internal and external customers.
- Excellent written and oral communication abilities;
- Knowledge of MS Office suite and PDF editing/reviewing software;
- Up to 10-15% travel domestically and abroad as required;
- Professional Engineer license preferred, not required.
