1.1 Purpose of the Position
Lead the safe, on-time, and specification-compliant installation, pre-commissioning and commissioning support of chemical processing lines in the metals industry (e.g., hydrochloric and mixed-acid pickling lines, acid regeneration plants, exhaust gas treatment/DeNOx, and chemical sections of galvanizing/coating lines). Coordinate internal teams and subcontractors, optimize process parameters to achieve guaranteed figures, and maintain complete process documentation and compliance with environmental standards.
1.2 Key Responsibilities (Accountabilities)
- Plan and supervise installation and start-up of chemical process equipment: pickling tanks and cascades, circulation systems, fume extraction and scrubbers, heat exchangers, dosing/skid systems, ARP reactors (spray roaster / fluidized bed), absorbers, crystallizers/solids handling and wastewater treatment.
- Execute and coordinate pre-commissioning/commissioning: flushing and leak/pressure tests; acid bath make-up; circulation and heating; acid concentration control; iron load tracking; bath turnover; ARP heat-up and stabilization; gas cleaning/DeNOx tuning; and emission/performance testing.
- Run analytical control and QA/QC: sample and analyze process media (titration, conductivity, iron/chloride, pH, temperature), verify mass/energy balances, and adjust parameters to meet throughput, quality and environmental KPIs.
- Implement environmental and HSE compliance: manage hazardous chemicals per MSDS/REACH; ensure containment, ventilation, PPE, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO); lead toolbox talks and work permits; enforce spill response and waste handling.
- Interface with adjacent disciplines (mechanical, piping, electrical, automation) for integrated line tests (e.g., line speed vs. pickling model, bath temperature, ECO-mode operation of ARP, and strip quality outcomes).
- Lead customer communication on site: daily/weekly coordination, progress and risk reporting, punch-list management, and training of customer operators in safe operation, sampling, troubleshooting and routine maintenance.
- Maintain redlines/as-built documentation, operating procedures (SOPs), checklists, and commissioning dossiers for handover; create improvement proposals for energy, acid and water consumption reduction (e.g., ECO mode, WAPUR, zero-effluent concepts).
1.3 Decision-Making Authority
- Assign and prioritize daily tasks for chemical installation and commissioning crews; sequence activities to meet schedule and safety requirements.
- Authorize rework for non-conformities and accept completed work based on test results, emissions data and quality criteria.
- Issue stop-work orders for chemical/HSE non-compliance; escalate scope, schedule, and contractual risks to Site/Project Management.
1.4 Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical / Process Engineering or related discipline.
- more than 10 years of relevant experience is a must.
- Proven experience in supervision/commissioning of chemical processing systems in industrial plants (preferably steel strip processing: pickling lines, Acid Regeneration Plant (ARP), Galvanizing line chemical sections).
- Hands-on knowledge of pickling chemistry (HCl; HF/HNO3 mixed acid), bath management, acid regeneration technologies (spray roasting, fluidized bed), and exhaust gas treatment (e.g., DeNOx).
- Familiarity with process models and automation interfaces; ability to read PFDs/P&IDs, single-line diagrams, and instrumentation loops; proficiency with MS Office; basic planning tools (e.g., MS Project).
- Languages: Good English; German beneficial; international travel willingness (~60–80%).
1.5 Skills & Competencies
- Leadership and crew supervision in multicultural environments; clear communication and conflict resolution.
- Strong process safety mindset; disciplined execution and documentation quality; HAZOP/LOPA exposure appreciated.
- Analytical problem solving and optimization; ownership and resilience under schedule and ramp-up pressure.
- Customer orientation and professional representation of ANDRITZ on site.
1.6 Working Conditions / Travel
Industrial plant environments involving acids, fumes and high-temperature equipment; strict adherence to chemical handling procedures and PPE (acid-resistant gear).
International travel typically 60–80%; extended site assignments; flexible working hours aligned with commissioning milestones.
1.1 Expectations (Summary)
Scope: Independently leads chemical processing work fronts (installation to performance testing) and coordinates multiple stakeholders to achieve guarantee values.
Complexity: Resolves varied technical/site constraints (acid balance, emissions, corrosion, interlocks) and adapts plans to changing conditions.
Independence: Operates with limited guidance; escalates when constraints impact safety, scope, or schedule.
Influence: Shapes daily site priorities and customer perception through safety, quality, and process stability.
Knowledge: Broad know-how in pickling/ARP/chemical sections and environmental compliance; strong understanding of acceptance and testing processes.
